A letter I wrote to the company this morning, that I thought I'd share with you...

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

 

Today, one year ago, EMG and QPM legally became one company.  It marks a day that we will eventually all understand to be the day that changed the trajectory and the possibility of us as a company.  A year ago today we began a whole new adventure for us as individuals and as a company.  It is a day both worth noting, and worth celebrating.

 

As I said at the Town Hall, I know that it has been a challenging year for many; either because you were working on integrating the company, while you carried out your “other day job” or because you were busy executing our daily work while having to understand and accept changes that were needed to weave our company and its policies and systems together.

 

It has been a successful first year, and I am grateful for everyone’s role and help.  Our adventure together is underway and our potential and future as a company is truly brighter than ever.

 

Many of you, may have seen Simon Sinek’s “Start with Why” video.  If you haven’t, I encourage you to take 18 minutes today and see it.  If you have, I encourage you to take 18 minutes today and watch it again.  There are a few messages and lessons that are worth hearing over and over again, and his is one of them.   I hope you take the time, not for me or for the company, but for yourself.  He shares a powerful concept that applies, in my opinion, to all aspects of our lives.  Click below;

His message in a nutshell, is that, “All the great organizations think, act and communicate in the exact same way.  It’s a simple idea.  The golden circle.  WHY, HOW, WHAT?”.  He explains in such a compelling way that “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it!  And, what you do simply proves what you believe.”  This concept is powerful on a company and strategy level and also at a granular tactical and conversational level. 

 

On this first anniversary of our merged company, I want nothing more than for you to be more aware of OUR “WHY”, and YOUR “WHY”.

 

When we came together last year with our new combined leadership team, and asked about our “WHY” – we rather quickly converged on an answer.

 

We exist as a company;

-          to enable our clients’ success by making it easier for them to make and execute intelligent decisions for their real estate and facility needs.

-          to enable our employees, through their experience at QPM and EMG, to take a meaningful step toward their dreams.

 

We believe that technical & executional excellence AND scalability can BOTH be achieved and need to be achieved, reliably, consistently, on-time and with integrity.

 

How we do that is with a technical and executional team that is nationally distributed, and with a centralized and standardized infrastructure that executes the logistics and work process similarly, that finds efficiencies in our processes, and ensures consistency and quality in our deliverables to our clients and the experience of everyone on our team, regardless of what service we are providing.  We achieve it with clear & standard processes.  We achieve it by leveraging & applying technology.

 

What we are doing – is becoming the best and largest provider of technical assessments and project management services in the United States, and we are currently doing PCAs, Phase Is, FCAs, RADs/GPNAs, Construction Management andAssessments and Surveys.

 

I know this can sound like corporate gobbledygook.  I assure you that is not our intent.   We will continue to try to make the words reflect more clearly and compellingly why we exist.  The company that we are building is not for every client, nor for every employee.  But those that see the value in what we believe, what we are building, and what we are doing, those who “get it”, get truly excited by it and will create something bigger as a result of it.  They see the need that we solve in the market.  They see the opportunity for personal development.  They see the potential & opportunity for a larger, more diversified, more robust company with greater opportunities for personal growth as well.  And, as we all know, that takes real time and effort to achieve.

 

In another month, we will launch ourselves into the market with a single brand, and in December we will celebrate the end of this year together.  Let’s finish 2015 Strong!

 

Our WHY defines our values - both who we aspire to be, and who we already are…

 

I hope you take a moment to watch the video (click the link above), reflect on it, and consider it for us as a company and for you.  I tell our new employees when I meet them in training, “The level to which you understand WHY you are here, and why we are here, is the level to which you will enjoy your time here and THRIVE.   And, the level to which we will be able to help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be.”  And, it applies to all of us as well, every day.

 

A year ago today we launched upon a new adventure.

and on the journey that lies ahead!
