I saw a recipe on Facebook for German Pancakes.

One of the many reasons to love Facebook...

It inspires me to try new things that might taste good for the family...

And, along the way, it conveys the whole message of "trying new things" and going a little farther than usual to say "I love you!"

SO, anyway...

I got up early enough to cook the German Pancakes with my youngest... We had fun getting the ingredients and just "making something" together...

He was in charge of the recipe... finding out how much of what was needed and when it should be added.

We were having fun...

UNTIL...

UNTIL...

I changed the recipe.

"Dad, that is NOT what the recipe calls for..." When I asked for brown sugar to add to the apples.

"DAD?!@!?"  He almost lost his mind when I asked for the Vanilla Extract...  "It says NOTHING about Vanilla Extract!"

Cooking for me is LIVING...  I looked at him with a very serious impression...

"If you follow the recipe in life... you will ONLY make life as good as the recipe is able to make it.  You will never make it better."  I said...

"But Dad, what if the recipe is AS GOOD as the pancakes can possibly be?"  We were having a fun, but very serious exchange of philosophy... and he knew it.

"Everything RECIPE in LIFE can be improved upon... Make it YOURS.... Take chances... BELIEVE that you can make LIFE better to your liking and that of those you love by IMPROVING upon the recipe..."

I know its just pancakes, but it is at the very core of my being and my purpose... I am inspired by others' recipes all day long... But, ultimately, I live to improve upon the recipe and to share my recipe with others... so that they can improve upon mine...

Such a simple and enjoyable moment with my son...

Such a meaningful and delicious exchange about life...

"In life and in pancakes", I told him, " I don't care what the recipe says... "It always tastes better with more vanilla and brown sugar...!"

In SWEET harmony,

Nestor
